Artist Graeme Atkinson
Graeme Atkinson Biography. The Art Place Chelmsford
Born in Lincolnshire in 1958 I pretty much gave up everything to do with art at the age of 12 concentrating on studying and classical music.
I studied Law at what is now the Anglia Ruskin University and then qualified as a solicitor in 1983.
From the late 1970s I have played French Horn with the Essex Symphony Orchestra and Essex Chamber Orchestra and I freelance for other orchestras whenever I am asked and they are playing something I enjoy, from Mozart to Mahler.
I shared the love of music with my wife, Cathy, but her real love was water colour painting and underwater photography. So, I began diving and also joined her on painting holidays in Tuscany. I was inspired by our teacher, David Chandler, a brilliant artist in his own right but also an amazing teacher. This was about 7 years ago. I painted in acrylics and water colour.
Last year I signed up to an oil painting course through Essex County Council Adult Education. I fell in love with the medium and whenever possible that is what I now use. Praise due to my teacher Daniel Hutchings.
I have always loved the surrealists and in particular the French artist Yves Tanguy. My favourite gallery is the Guggenheim in Venice.
I hope you enjoy my paintings but do also check out my wife’s underwater photographs and water colours also on display at the Art Place Chelmsford
